Producers Reaction to Video

The goal of this project was to produce a two minute video on a news story on Long Island. In turn I ended up learning to edit picture and video using online programs which provided a lesson in reporting as well.

When we were editing the video some of us including myself used Kaltura.  After using the program and attempting to edit on it I just didn’t feel Kaltura was ready to be used yet. The speed of the program is very slow so slow that I couldn’t even use it on my computer at home. It also wouldn’t save any text that you put on it after closing out the program. Finally it was very difficult to create a voice over using the program.  So I just didn’t feel Kaltura was the best program for this project.

I used a flip cam to shoot this video; they are perfect for online journalism. They are extremely simple to use and you can take video and put it on to a computer in seconds using no fancy programming what so ever, which can be very effect in new journalism. This video really took me out of my comfort zone, I felt like an actual reporter when I was walking around down town Garden City asking each real estate agency I saw weather they though housing discrimination existed on Long Island. The project also taught us what to do when things went wrong. For instant I wasn’t able to get a quote on camera from a real-estate agent, which I thought I absolutely needed for the project. I had to find other valid sources I could use to make the video work. All and all this was a great learning experience and left me with something to feel proud about after wards.
